A complete guide to using Singapore's postal services

Need to send letters or parcels within Singapore, but not sure where to start? Lucky for you, it’s a pretty straightforward process. Singapore’s national mail carrier can get all of that done—whether it’s regular letters, bulkier parcels, or important mail you’d like to be able to track. You can even expedite your mail if you have a last-minute item to get delivered.

For frequent senders or larger-volume deliveries, there are also plenty of reliable private courier services you can turn to for added flexibility and convenience.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Singapore's postal service, from postage costs and delivery timelines to tracking options, packaging requirements, and where to find post boxes. You’ll also find a rundown of alternative courier services if SingPost doesn’t quite fit your needs. And for bulky or oversized items, like furniture, appliances, or multiple packages, Wise Move makes it easy to compare quotes and book trusted, vetted delivery providers in just a few clicks.

Sending a letter or parcel in Singapore

Sending letter or parcel in SingaporeFor the vast majority of people, posting a letter via Singapore’s national postal service provider is the default mode of postage.

It’s relatively fast, affordable, and reliable by most postal services’ standards. And it’s a straightforward process too. Simply locate your nearest SingPost posting box or post office to drop your stamped and addressed envelope off.

Singapore’s national postal service provider, Singapore Post Limited, commonly known as SingPost, has been in operation for 160 years (and counting).

They offer a variety of mailing options, including:

  • Basic letters and cards
  • Regular-sized packages (that fit into an A4-sized envelope)
  • Oversized packages
  • There are also additional tracking options, expedited shipping options, and international delivery.

Below, we’ll tell you the steps to follow for each type of mail you may need to send out, the dimensions and expected costs, as well as delivery timelines.

Sending untracked letters and postcards within Singapore

If what you want to do is to send a basic letter or postcard within Singapore, the service you’re looking at is SingPost’s Standard Mail. This is an untracked service, meaning you will not be able to track the mail’s location at each point of its delivery.

The key thing to note is the size of your letter or postcard, which will determine its cost. You can use this rate calculator to work it out.

Dimensions, weight and cost of standard mail (must not exceed 500g):

Steps to send a standard mail through SingPost

  1. Mail packaging and address: All mail should be packaged in a clean, plain envelope and sealed. The mailing address should be written in a large font size in the middle of the envelope, in the following format:

Addressee’s name

Street name and number

Unit number

Postal code

  1. Sealing: Seal the envelope with glue. Do not staple.

  2. Stamp: The stamp should be affixed to the top right-hand corner of the envelope. If more than one stamp is used, they should be affixed horizontally (ie, side by side). You may purchase stamps from SingPost post offices or any SingPost self-service automated machines (SAM) kiosks located all over the island.

  3. Return address: A return address should be written clearly and in a large font size on the back of the envelope, on the top.

  4. Mailing: Post your letter or postcard at your nearby SingPost posting box.

  • Delivery timeline: Within 2 working days if your mail is posted out before 5 pm on Mondays to Thursdays, and before 6 pm on Fridays, in post boxes outside of the Central Business District (CBD). For mail posted in post boxes WITHIN the CBD, the cut-off timings are before 7 pm from Monday to Thursday, and before 8 pm on Friday.

Sending untracked small packages within Singapore

Any mail that contains objects and non-paper-based items will be considered a package. These can include clothes, SIM cards, phone cases, or hair accessories. Small packages must not exceed the following dimensions and weight:

  • Dimensions: 324mm (length) x 229mm (width) x 65mm (height)

  • Weight: not more than 2kg

Steps to send a small package within Singapore via SingPost

  1. Packaging: Pack your item in good-quality packaging. Opt for waterproof packaging, if possible, with cushioning materials like bubble wrap or foam to protect it.

  2. Sealing: Use waterproofing tape meant for shipping to tightly wrap up your package.

  3. Addressing: The mailing address should be written in a large font size in the middle of the envelope, in the following format:

Addressee’s name

Street name and number

Unit number

Postal code

  1. Stamp: The stamp should be affixed to the top right-hand corner of the envelope. If more than one stamp is used, they should be affixed horizontally (ie, side by side). You may purchase stamps from SingPost post office counters or any SingPost self-service automated machines (SAM) kiosks located all over the island. You are strongly encouraged to weigh your parcel, which can be done at both the post office and on SAM kiosks, and purchase a stamp of the correct value directly.

  2. Return address: A return address should be written clearly and in a large font size on the back of the envelope, on the top.

  3. Mailing: For thinner packages, you can use any regular SingPost posting box. Packages that cannot fit in a regular posting box can be dropped off at larger posting boxes or the counters at SingPost post offices.

  4. Delivery timeline: Within 2 working days if your mail is posted out before 5 pm Monday to Thursday, and before 6 pm on Friday, in post boxes outside of the Central Business District (CBD). For mail posted in post boxes WITHIN the CBD, the cut-off timings are before 7 pm from Monday to Thursday, and before 8 pm on Friday.

  • Where is it delivered to: Registered Mail deliveries are made to your doorstep and can be tracked on the SingPost website by entering the tracking number you will be provided with upon making payment at the SingPost counter. You will need to sign your receipt of the Registered Mail delivery as proof.

Sending international mail from Singapore

If you want to send mail or packages overseas, you can do so with SingPost too. Here are your options and the things you’ll need to consider when selecting the service you require for your mail.

Surface Mail

  • What is it: The most cost-effective way to send your mail (below 2kg) overseas.

  • How to purchase: Pack your mail securely and ensure that it fits within the dimensions for Regular mail (240mm x 162mm x 6mm) or Large mail (324mm x 229mm x 14mm). Postage fees are quite fixed, no matter which country you are mailing to. Postage depends more on weight for Surface Mail. Purchase the stamps from a SAM kiosk or directly from a SingPost counter. You can drop your standard Surface Mail off into the standard SingPost posting boxes, into the Other Countries slot, or at SingPost post office counters.

  • Where is it delivered to: Surface Mail deliveries are made directly to the doorstep in most countries.

  • Delivery time: Depending on the country, delivery time ranges from 3 weeks for most Asian cities to up to 18 weeks for other destinations in the Middle East, Europe, America, and Africa.

  • Good for: If you’re not in a hurry and want the most cost-effective way of getting your mail to an overseas address.

Air Mail

  • What is it: A basic airmail service to send your basic mail (below 500g) or small packages (below 2kg) overseas.

  • How to purchase: Pack your mail securely to fit within the dimensions for Basic mail (305 x 381 x 20mm) or Basic packages (the longest side must be 600mm or less, and the sum of the Length, Breath, and Height must be less than or equal to 900mm). Postage fees depend very much on the country you are mailing to, as well as the weight of your mail. Check the general postage fees or calculate the fees more precisely using SingPost's rates calculator. Purchase the stamps from a SAM kiosk or directly from a SingPost counter. You can drop your standard Surface Mail off into the standard SingPost posting boxes, into the Other Countries slot, or at SingPost post office counters.

  • Where is it delivered to: Air Mail deliveries are made directly to the doorstep in most countries. Basic Air Mail is not trackable, but you can add on a Registered Mail tracking service for SG$3.60, with which you will be able to track your item’s delivery status and be notified of a successful delivery, which must be signed against by the recipient. You will need to purchase this at a SingPost post office counter.

  • Delivery time: Expect delivery between 3 and 12 working days.

  • Good for: A relatively quick and fuss-free overseas mail delivery service for mail below 2kg.

SpeedPost International

  • What is it: A doorstep overseas delivery service for items not more than 20kg.

  • How to purchase: You can check the estimated rate on the SpeedPost website, create an order on the ezy2ship website, or book a delivery at a SingPost post office counter.

  • Delivery time: Delivery times will differ depending on the service selected.

    • SpeedPost Economy: 3-15 weeks

    • SpeedPost Priority: 3-14 working days

    • SpeedPost Express: 2-9 working days

  • Good for: When you need to deliver bulkier items (weighing a maximum of 20 kg) or urgent overseas deliveries.

Am I sending a letter or a parcel?

Letters are paper-based mail that must fit within standard-sized envelopes (A5 or A4) and must weigh below 500g. Everything else, including flat and small items such as SIM cards, hair accessories, and phone cases, will be considered a Small Package and must be paid for as such.

How do I address my letter or parcel to ensure it’s sent to the right place?

In Singapore, the convention for writing an address on a mail or package envelope follows the following format, in neat, printed lettering that is approximately 12 points in size, using waterproof ink:

Line 1: Name of addressee

Line 3: Building Name

Line 4: Unit Number

Line 5: Postal Code (Singapore XXXXXX)

You must also ensure a Return Address is written clearly and neatly in the same format as above, on the back of your envelope, in waterproof ink.

SmartPac tracked mail is delivered directly into your home’s letterbox, typically the one assigned to your unit in your HDB block or condo. The VKN team led by Mani arrived on time and came well prepared for the move. They were also very agile to adjust to our requirements, since we needed extra boxes and they also helped with the packing of fragile items like glassware and crockery (these were all bubble wrapped and packed up). All the items were transported without any damage. Overall, I'd highly recommend them for their efficiency and hard working staff.
