What are you moving?

Singapore is a great place to start a new chapter in your life, with beautiful landscapes, well-maintained public spaces, secure residential areas, top-notch medical facilities, and the best foreign community all waiting for you. Travellers will find several opportunities in this diverse metropolis.

Moving to a new house in Singapore for the first time, however, can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you have never moved before. Don't fret; we'll be here to guide you through any obstacles you may face on your journey to a new house. So, check out our guide on Singaporean culture and customs and the must-dos before you relocate there, whether you're just curious or want to get pumped up for the big move.

Pick a Legitimate Moving Company

When looking for a moving company, it's important to read the evaluations they've gotten online. Make sure to conduct your research and hire a reputable company with trained employees before moving day. Moving your household goods requires skill and care, so selecting a lousy moving company could lead to broken furniture and other valuables.

As soon as you've decided on a movers and packers company, give them a call to set up a date for the move and ask for a list of items that won't be accepted. Depending on the moving company, you may not be permitted to transport items like spray cans, pesticides, propane tanks, and more. Get the moving-in new house checklist before you start packing your belongings, so you can separate the prohibited items in advance.

If you intend to observe a specific Chinese ritual for moving into a new house, inform the movers ahead of time so they can prepare accordingly. Their extensive network of professional movers guarantees that your belongings will arrive at your new Singaporean home promptly, allowing you to focus on welcoming the yang energy that will help you settle in.

Change Your Billing Address in Singapore

Moving to Singapore

When packing up to move out, it's easy to lose track of time and forget to update your subscriptions and billing addresses. It's a good idea to update your home address as quickly as possible if you don't want your credit cards to be denied.

The National Registration Act of Singapore also mandates that individuals notify the government of their new address within 28 days of making the change. Changing your address quickly helps ensure that mail, subscriptions, and packages are sent to your new location rather than your old one. To do this, you will need documentation of your new address.

For utility transfers, this is also vital to have. Make sure to notify your cable and internet companies of your impending move and arrange for disconnect and reconnect dates. Changing your billing address before moving day may seem like a hassle, but you'll be glad you took care of it now instead of when you're in the thick of packing, loading the van, and moving into a new house.

Get Used to Using Public Transport

Moving to Singapore

Public transportation in Singapore is, like the rest of the country, in excellent condition and offers both low fares and enhanced efficiency. A mere 20-minute delay can generate national headlines. The city-state has made significant investments in its public transportation infrastructure, including the ongoing extension of the MRT (Singapore's version of London's Tube).

What's more, getting your hands on a private vehicle in Singapore may present a few more challenges than you're used to. The initial purchase price is higher than in some other nations, and that's before you include the cost of the government's Certificate of Entitlement (COE), which can be as much as the car itself.

Carefully Choose a Moving Date

Moving to Singapore

Even though most people would rather move on the weekend or a holiday, the middle of the month is the best time to find deals on moving truck rentals. Generally speaking, prices will be higher throughout the holidays because of how busy everyone is.

If you're able to do so in advance, try to schedule your relocation for a time around October and April, since demand is often at its lowest. And what's another plus? During the week, traffic is lighter, allowing for a more effective and affordable relocation.

You can also opt to choose Feng Shui lucky dates for moving into a new house in Singapore. It is believed that following the Chinese ritual for moving into a new house will create a place of peace, clarity, and happiness in your new home. So, be smart about choosing your moving date!

Purchase the Proper Supplies

Moving to Singapore

Packing tape, markers, labels, and the right kind of moving boxes are all necessities for a successful relocation. If you're relocating, make sure you don't use any broken boxes. If you fill them too full, the box will collapse when you lift it, spilling the contents all over the floor.

You may need a special box, like a telescope box, to transport items like your televisions, mirrors, and paintings. It's important to plan ahead of time and follow a home move checklist to make sure you have everything you need to pack up your old house.

Organise Items to Be Moved

Moving to Singapore

Before you start packing, separate your belongings into three distinct piles. Items destined for the new home should go into pile 1, those to be auctioned or donated into pile 2, and those destined for storage into pile 3. Hold a garage sale of Pile #2's contents if it's too much to transport in one trip. Relocating will be less of a hassle and will cost you less money if you have fewer goods to transport.

Also, keep in mind that you're making a huge error if you're not labelling the boxes. Doing so will lead you to open every single box to see if you packed your particular item in the wrong one on the way to your new house. As an additional precaution, please mark all fragile objects as such.

Moving to Singapore FAQs

Moving to Singapore

Singapore has always been at the top of Mercer's Quality of Living Survey, which is a well-known list of the best cities in the world with the highest living standards based on people's security, safety, good governance, and sustainable economic growth.

Mercer's list has consistently placed Singapore at the top for many years. Thus, your decision to relocate to Singapore is not surprising. To get you started on your relocation journey, here are the most frequently asked questions about moving to Singapore.

Should I Move to Singapore?

Yes, you should. It's no secret that Singapore is a hotspot for foreigners. Singapore is an ideal spot for any foreigner to start a new life because of the pleasant climate all through the year and the welcoming attitude of its citizens toward visitors.

Raising a family in Singapore is an excellent option because of the country's excellent protective measures, affordable domestic help, and high standard of living compared to the average of the world. This city is known for its high quality of life, and its medical facilities are among the best in the world.

Where to Live in Singapore?

Holland Village is one of the most desirable areas to live for foreign nationals because of its convenient location. Its location is ideal, as it is close to the Orchard shopping district, the Central Business District, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, and MacRitchie Reservoir. Holland Village is home to many families, but it maintains a vibrant sense of diversity with a rich selection of eateries, night spots, and boutiques.

The trendy Dempsey Hill district, with its galleries and restaurants, is just a short stroll away, as are several large business parks, including Biopolis, Fusionopolis, and Mediopolis. Not only that, but nearby you'll find one of Singapore's major hawker centres, Holland Village Shopping Center. Condos, bungalows, and houses are all available in Holland Village, and it's situated close to a number of the finest schools in the area.

How to Move to Singapore Without a Job?

The hard truth is that you need to have a job in Singapore if you intend to work and live there lawfully. Furthermore, your salary must be above the threshold necessary to obtain a work visa. Your employer, or EA, will apply for your Singapore work visa through EP Online once you arrive in Singapore.

In addition, international workers with a Visit Pass to Singapore are prohibited from working while in the country. However, there are circumstances under which holders may apply for other types of work passes, such as those for journalists. Those who hold it are only allowed to labour for a maximum of 60 days.

Worst Things About Living in Singapore?

When compared to other parts of Asia and the world at large, the cost of living in Singapore is notably higher than in other countries. To give you an idea of how much this all adds up to, consider that the cost of living in Singapore is, on average, 13% higher than in the UK. That's why Singapore has the second-highest percentage of millionaires in all of Asia, at 5.5%.

However, if you learn where to explore, it is possible to come across items for a reasonable price. The cost of a trip to Singapore can be kept to a minimum by avoiding things like expensive restaurants and hotels with infinity pools. Consider taking public transportation instead of buying a pricey vehicle. The buses, cabs, and MRT are not only cheap but also quick and easy to use.

After booking, they came by on the same day to collect the items even though I specified a much longer period for them to do so. They called to check if they could arrive earlier to collect the items instead of the agreed time. They removed the items very quickly from the 2nd floor of a terrace house without any fuss. No extra charge. Very transparent. Job well done!
