What are you moving?

Congratulations! You just bought your dream home. However, there are a lot of things to consider when you move and keeping a track of all the to-dos before moving in is a chore.

Although getting ready to move into a new home can be overwhelming, remember that the hassle of moving into a new place is both joy and excitement. To help you have a positive moving experience we've gathered these tips so you'll finally be ready to pop open the champagne and celebrate your new house.

Find a reputable Singapore mover

Regardless of whether you're moving long-distance or across town, hiring a professional Singapore mover will keep your goods safe and secured. And since they have the knowledge and specialized equipment to move your belongings, moving out doesn't have to be a few days' task. Hire a professional Singapore mover and get all your stuff into your new apartment in just a few hours.

Finding it hard to research trusted movers in Singapore? Using a moving company marketplace like Wise Move will help you get multiple quotes by submitting just one delivery request.

Change your address

When you move to a new house you will also want to make sure that you notify the right people of your new address. As you may have guessed, notifying the post office of your change of address is one of the top priorities so that you will get any mail delivered to your new home. Secondly, make sure to let your employer know of your new address. They will update paychecks and make sure pay stubs, tax forms and other employment documents go to the right place.

Lastly, don't forget to give your bank institution a heads-up if you update your new address online. You don't want your bank details to be sent to your old address.

Transferring the utilities

Contact your utility service providers a few weeks prior to moving to schedule the disconnection of your cable and internet service. You will also need to schedule an installation date for your new home before you move. It’s important to have it ready once you move into your new home.

Change your locks

It's always a good practice to purchase a new lock for your new home to make your house safer and more secure. Even if you're not concerned about the previous homeowner, you never know who might have a duplicate of the keys. Call a locksmith and get your locks changed or if you are confident enough to do it on your own, change the locks for each door that you intend to rekey. Installing a new security system and using a strong password is also recommended and provides peace of mind.

You must also inspect your new home and make sure that the windows close tightly and lock securely.

Check smoke detectors

Inspect and test smoke detectors in your new home and make sure to change their batteries if they're not in good shape. Also, check where they are placed within the house. It is very important that they are placed in the right area.

Obtain school or medical records

Moving long-distance means a change of school for your school-aged children. So, make sure to obtain or request a copy of your kid's school records or arrange their direct transfer.

You will also need to find a new family doctor, physiotherapist or dentist. The easiest way to find a good doctor is to simply ask your current primary care doctor for any recommendations. But always remember that every person has different health needs so be sure to do some research to determine if the physician is suited to your needs.

Meet the neighbours

Once you've settled in after the move, meeting your neighbours is not only a sign of good manners but is helpful to have a bit of guidance in a completely unfamiliar environment.

Don't be afraid to knock on their doors and introduce yourself with a box full of freshly baked treats. Also, attending community-based or neighbourhood events is a good way to meet your neighbours and an opportunity to show them that you want to be part of the community.

Organize a housewarming party

Once you've successfully moved in. You may wish to celebrate it by throwing a housewarming party where you can invite any friends in the new town. A humble housewarming party is one way of meeting new people in your neighbourhood - who knows, you may even have a good relationship with some of them.
