How to Prepare your Item for Storage

Storage is a great idea in certain transitional situations - when you’re moving from one home to another or when you need extra space to store your belongings while you’re renovating your place. However, before contacting Singapore movers and throwing any items in the storage unit, making sure of the proper ways to prepare and pack all your things is a must.

Here are 7 useful tips to follow in preparing your items for storage.

Research storage restrictions

First, it’s essential to do your homework and research what you can and cannot store inside your storage unit. The storage facility should provide you with a list of prohibited items but in case they don’t, make sure to ask for their rules and restrictions.

In general, items that are banned for storage are propane gas, perishable food, explosives, paints, plants and medicine. Remember, if it’s flammable, you can’t put it inside your storage unit.

Create an inventory list

Before loading your items into boxes,  make note of what you are going to store - certainly you don’t have to pack everything for storage. Use criteria such as the sentimental value of the item and of course, its current condition. In addition, having a checklist on hand makes it a lot easier for you to remember what exactly is in the storage unit.  It is also advisable to leave a copy of your inventory list so that when you go to pull things out, you'll have the list ready in front of you.

Use the right packing materials

When packing up your things for storage, buying the correct packing materials including specialised storage boxes is very important. Have boxes in a variety of sizes, lots of packing paper and bubble wrap for your fragile items, cushioning materials and suitable plastic containers to keep moisture out.

Clean your storage unit and belongings

Before placing your items in a storage unit, you will need to properly clean them by using

disinfectant wipes, a vacuum cleaner and an all-purpose cleaning spray. This eliminates the chance they will have a musty and mildew scent when you receive them and bring it to your new home. You must wipe down all surfaces with a cloth and an all-purpose cleaner. Vacuum your furniture thoroughly, especially your couches and air cushions.

Disassemble large items

Beds, sofas, dining tables and any other large or bulky items should be disassembled before being placed into storage. Not only disassembling them helps you save space in storage but also offers better protection for these items from wear and tear.

Label boxes clearly

Every box should be labelled. This is to make it easier to know what is inside each box. Don’t just write “kitchen utensils” and be specific as to what type of items you have in the boxes (dishes, pots and pans)

Protect your items from outside conditions

If your storage does not have climate control, then you’ll have to take matters into your own hands and make sure your belongings are safe from elements (dust, moisture and moulds). First, ensure all of your items are dry, to begin with. Apply a protective spray to furniture and leather goods.

What are you moving?

To keep moisture out, seal your boxes tightly. It’s also a great idea to cover fabric furniture, such as couches and mattresses, with stretch wrap to further protect it from any elements. For electronics and cords stored them in sealable bags with two packs of silica gel to keep them free from moisture.

Once your items are packed and prepped for storage, it's time to contact professional movers Singapore to help you move your belongings.  Ensure a stress-free move and get quotes from Singapore's best moving companies in just one enquiry through Wise Move.

Will recommend to anyone looking for a responsive and responsible moving service! 6 stars service! I needed to move my office urgently and Faith Relocation responded quickly and was consistently responsive with updates! The moving was made smooth with great teamwork by the entire team lead by Andy. Each of the team member handled our items with utmost care. We overestimated what was possible to fit within a truck and Andy , knowing we had a tight dateline, immediately went to make sure that he could make 2 trips. Even though was not around with the movers, she followed up twice to ensure that all was good. Andy made sure that the move was smooth and organised. Extremely pleased and impress with Faith Relocation 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
