Home Moving Tips for Single Parents

Thinking of moving to a new home? Planning to start a new life with your kids? If you have recently become a single parent and wanted to start fresh, there are probably a lot of things you are planning right now. Moving sounds exciting but as a single parent, doing your responsibilities for your kids while tackling all the necessary tasks for the big move is never easy.  You also need to keep in mind that you are not only thinking about your own well-being but your kids’ well-being, too.

If you are a single parent and still looking for answers on how to have an easier and smooth home move, you found the right place. We gather some tips for you to apply during your home move preparation. This will not make your move totally stress-free, but this will make it easier for you and your kids to manage the move.

1. Create a moving plan

Creating a moving plan is key to having an organised move especially if you are the only one taking care of your children and at the same time doing everything yourself. As a single parent, make sure to have enough time for preparation. Give yourself at least 2 to 3 months to prepare and to do necessary tasks such as decluttering, packing, cleaning, processing some paperwork for kids’ school transfer and finding a trusted moving company to hire.

Consider creating a checklist and a timeline for you to avoid forgetting significant tasks and to finish all necessary actions according to the plan. This will also give you the satisfaction to see each task getting crossed out in your list.

2. Declutter

In every house move, decluttering is necessary to get rid of all things you don’t need and want to bring to your new home. This will reduce the items that need to be packed which means less time and energy you need. Aside from that, you will be saving space in your moving truck and if you will be hiring furniture movers, this means you can minimize labour costs.

In addition, decluttering will give you a chance to find items you no longer need but are still in good condition. You either give it to your friends or donate it to local charities. If you wanted to earn extra funds for your move, try selling those items by posting them on online marketplaces like Craigslist or if you have more time, organising a garage sale a month before your move would be ideal as well.

3. Prepare your kids

Moving home can be a tough experience for kids, especially older ones who already established deep friendships in their current school and neighbourhood.  Children will be terrified and hesitant since they need to transfer to a new school. The best way to help them cope with changes is through communication. Informing them ahead of time and asking them how they feel is an ideal way to address their concerns. Help them to understand why you need to move and share the benefits of moving.

Remember, good communication with a positive attitude will help them accept the reality of moving.

4.  Get your kids involved

It is important to involve the kids during the moving process. This will not just take away the burden of doing all the tasks by yourself but will give good effects on your kids if it was done in a fun and positive way. This will also give them a sense of control over the changes that they will be facing.

You can let the kids help you with cleaning, packing, and decluttering. For younger kids, you can give them simple tasks such as sorting toys and books. This way, you have the chance to teach them to donate items they no longer wanted to charities. Don’t forget to let them be creative and have fun during the moving process so they to cope easily with the changes.

5.  Keep a positive attitude

As a single parent, moving to a new place will be daunting for you since you need to do your responsibilities for your kids and at the same time face new challenges. Whatever reason you have for your move, you need to keep a positive and good attitude during the preparation process. Your kids will look up to you for support so as much as possible, don’t let them see or feel that you are worried and doubtful about the move. Remove all the negativity you have for your kids to feel secure and think that everything is going to be alright.

6.  Get help from friends

Home moving is not a walk in the park. It requires a lot of tasks which is usually challenging for a single parent. Even if you will hire a moving company for help, you still need to do a lot of preparations before the big day. This is a great time to ask for help from your trusted friends. This will make your preparation easier and faster which will lessen the burden and worries you already feel. They can help you with decluttering, cleaning, hosting a garage sale and packing all your belongings.

Don’t forget to return the favour to your friends. Serve them great food and drinks to show your gratitude.

7.  Hire a mover

Hiring a trusted and reputable mover is one of the best options to lessen the stress during the home move for a single parent.  As a parent, you are not only thinking about the items you will be moving with you but most especially your kids’ well-being. Additionally, hiring Singapore movers will give you more time to spend with your kids and help them to cope with the new changes. Also, this will make your move much safer and faster since they have enough knowledge, experience and equipment to make sure that all your belongings are moved correctly.

Will recommend to anyone looking for a responsive and responsible moving service! 6 stars service! I needed to move my office urgently and Faith Relocation responded quickly and was consistently responsive with updates! The moving was made smooth with great teamwork by the entire team lead by Andy. Each of the team member handled our items with utmost care. We overestimated what was possible to fit within a truck and Andy , knowing we had a tight dateline, immediately went to make sure that he could make 2 trips. Even though was not around with the movers, she followed up twice to ensure that all was good. Andy made sure that the move was smooth and organised. Extremely pleased and impress with Faith Relocation 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
