What are you moving?

Packing is never easy to organize, it’s time-consuming and takes a lot of strategic thought. Unless you are willing to pay for Singapore movers with packing services (which is, by the way, an additional charge), then you will have to take care of the packing yourself. So, it comes as no surprise that you’ll want to get started as soon as possible and shouldn’t let procrastination get in the way of your timeline.

If you have fully decided on taking the DIY approach and packing things on your own then you will need to know what to pack first for your big move. So before you go packing, here is some valuable information for a smoother, quicker and easier move.

Check it off

The moment you know you're moving, you should take inventory of your belongings and sort everything before you start packing for a move.

Utilize a sheet of paper and go from room to room and record the items in every single room.

Doing this will help you organize faster and decide what will go with you and what will be left behind.

Gather your packing supplies

When it comes to knowing where to start when moving house, you need to ensure you have quality packing materials on hand. Here's the list of packing materials you'll need.

Now it’s time to pack

Let’s now get down to the business of packing.

Pack items that are in storage

When you first make your packing plan, items in storage, garage, basements or attics should be the first items you pack since these items are already in the boxes. Also, you’re most likely not going to use any of these items on the last days of your stay in your old home. So, roll up your sleeves and go through each of your belongings stored in your garage, basement, attic and closet and toss out the items you don’t want to bring to your new home.

Out-of-season clothes, shoes and accessories

Out-of-season clothing is easy to pack first on the go since it may already be in boxes inside your closet. Anything you won’t wear for a month or before the moving day can be packed.

China and other rarely used dishes

Pretty sure you won’t be hosting luxury dinners on the go (Unless it’s a packing party). So it’s a good idea to pack up the rarely used specialised dishes or fine china that you do not use frequently. While you are at it, make sure to clearly mark “fragile” on the box and pack them very carefully with bubble wrap.

Books

If you own a large library, it’s good to have them packed early on. If you are an avid reader, pull your current read aside and pack the rest of your books and secure them in small moving boxes.

Extra towels and linens

Blankets, towels and sheets should all be packed away and just keep a set or two of bed sheets and towels in use for the final week before you move. Just plan on washing the same few towels so you don’t overload your hampers before moving out.

There can be a lot of things to do when moving home but with a bit of planning and some organizational skills, your move can be exciting and less stressful.
