5 Rules for Downsizing When Moving

People downsize for many reasons. Maybe your kids have moved out and you no longer need so much space, downsizing your home because of financial reasons or getting rid of unused space and saving money or maybe you just simply want to eliminate some of the items you've accumulated over the years. While downsizing may seem daunting it is a perfect opportunity to assess all your stuff and just keep what matters and precious to you.

Here is some expert downsizing step-by-step guide to making downsizing easier:

Plan ahead

Don't wait to make decisions and prepare for a move in advance. Start by putting together a plan early on and work on one room at a time. Make sure to get accurate measurements of the rooms, doors and hallways of your new house. Then measure all your large furniture so you can easily find out if you will have enough space for them in your new home.

Stay organized and set aside reasonable amounts of time going through all your belongings. Walk through each room in your home and take note of the things you need and don't need. You can use a simple four-pile system to make the job much easier.

  • items you will bring into your new home

  • items you will donate to a local charity

  • items you will get rid of

  • items you will sell

Ditch any duplicates

We all have many items in twin numbers at our home, which is very common in the kitchen. Having six muffin tins to several pairs of glasses and different cookie sheets will just clutter your home. If you have multiples of these items you can afford to let the extras go. You can sell these duplicate items to earn extra cash or you can give them away to your family or friends.

Digitize as much as possible

Today’s modern technology can come to help you with downsizing. Bulky CDs/DVD's and your other paperwork can also be converted into digital files (or uploaded to a cloud). If you have documents you can’t bear to lose, such as your birth certificate and property records, have a backup to upload them in a separate drive or cloud. If you don't trust the cloud, getting a hard drive for $50 for 1TB of storage is recommended. Doing this can free up many piles and boxes of documents and personal files.

Donate unsentimental items

Moving cost is based on the weight of your items. If you have fewer items to transport the faster Singapore movers will finish the moving job and your moving expense will be lesser too. Donating unneeded items gives you an opportunity to help out your community as you prepare to move. Some nonprofits and charities accept and will be happy to pick up home items and clothing that is still in good condition.

Plan your storage space

The storage area in your new home will be less than what you've had until now. It’s important to plan your storage space in advance so you can organize and maximize your new space. Get rid of as much stuff as possible and you must determine how many closets or cabinets you will have and what their dimensions will be. There are also several tricks you can use so that you can create extra space even in your smaller home. Use multifunctional furniture that has built-in storage space inside such as beds with drawers underneath. Identifying how much storage space you have will help you get an idea of how much stuff you can store in your new home.

I don't normally write reviews but they impressed me on the following: Came earlier than expected. Took care when moving things. Also did exceptionally fast given only 1 main mover since the other was on MC leave at last minute. Communication on WhatsApp was smooth. Also the price was better than the other quotes. Extremely happy I hired them, and very grateful they worked so hard given how many boxes I had. I have recommended them to all my friends.
